One of LEGO's best moves was turning their beloved brick toys into video games. The perfect blend of nostalgia, creativity, and humour, the LEGO® video game franchise has something for everyone. There's seriously a LEGO® game out there for everyone, so let's countdown the five best LEGO® video games you absolutely have to play.
#5 - LEGO® Racers (1999)
Let's start with a classic.
LEGO® Racers was one of the first LEGO® games ever released, and it's still a ton of fun to this day. Players can race as their favourite characters from the LEGO® universe on tracks made out of, you guessed it, LEGO®! The game is simple but addicting, allowing you to play as such iconic characters, including the likes of Captain Redbeard, King Kahuka, Johnny Thunder, Baron Von Barron, and Gypsy Moth.
Good old-fashioned racing fun, and for many of us, one of the best introductions we could have had to the LEGO® video game universe!
Platforms: N64, PlayStation, PC, Game Boy
#4 - LEGO® Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (2012)
Come on, we can't have a list of the best LEGO® video games and not mention the Batman series, specifically the DC Super Heroes edition released back in 2012.
The game expanded on the already existing LEGO® Batman formula by adding tons of new DC characters, locations, and abilities. The storyline is also fantastic, following Batman, Robin, and a host of other heroes as they try to stop Lex Luthor and the Joker from taking over Gotham City.
A must-play for any LEGO® fans!
Platforms: PlayStation 3, PC, XBox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS
#3 - LEGO® The Lords of the Rings (2012)
Yes, they only went and did it. One of the most breathtaking fantasy book and movie series of all time, and they turned it into a LEGO® game, and it didn't disappoint.
Following the classic story, players could control all their favourite characters as they journeyed across Middle-earth against true evil. From Gandalf the Grey to Gollum, there was a character for everyone, and the game perfectly captured the magic of both The Lord of the Rings and LEGO®.
A perfect blend that has always held a special place in our hearts.
Platforms: PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS
#2 - LEGO® City Undercover (2013)
Okay, this is kind of the unofficial understanding by all those who played it, but this was basically the LEGO® version of the Grand Theft Auto series, are we right? Play as Chase McCain, an undercover police officer who had to go deep into the criminal underworld of LEGO® City to take down the notorious crime boss Rex Fury.
The game was huge, with tons to do and discover, and it was just a blast to play. The free roam was just awesome, and the ability to just smash up everything remains unmatched.
If you're looking for a LEGO® game with a bit more of an edge, then this is the one for you.
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
#1 - LEGO® Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007)
And, coming in at number one, I mean come, how could we not pick Star Wars?
The ground-breaking video game that stole the hearts of Star Wars fans' hearts worldwide, selling over 60 million copies worldwide, and paved the way to the second release in 2022, The Skywalker Saga, which sold another 3.2 million copies in just the first two weeks.
There's just something about controlling your favourite Star Wars characters in LEGO® form that makes this game so irresistible. And with a story spanning all nine movies, plus tons of bonus content, there's literally hours and hours of gameplay to enjoy.
